The 2025 event is offering one Technical Tour of the University of California, San Diego’s DERConnect.
Monday, 20 January 2025 from 1:00 – 4:00pm
Cost: $40 per person
50 person maximum
DERConnect’s Mission: The primary objective is to build a testbed that allows universities, utilities, and industry leaders to achieve a better understanding of how to integrate renewable energy resources into the power grid. We are driven by the need to decarbonize the electrical grid and the lack of existing large-scale, centralized testing facilities. While the number and diversity of distributed energy resources is on the rise, the adoption of these resources is hindered by concerns about safety, reliability and costs. DERConnect represents one all-inclusive facility that enables testing of novel approaches and algorithms for real-world applications.
Schedule:
- 5 min Introduction to DERConnect and use cases
- 5 min SEL PowerMAX islanding and nanogrid control system.
- 3 min Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and Typhoon-Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) systems.
- 3 min RTDS demo: SCADA level monitoring screen showing distribution feeder voltage control
- 3 min Microcontroller control room that enables distributed control of up to 1,000 DER.
- 5 min Distributed controls demonstration for frequency control / signal tracking
- 5 min Other hardware including Spitzenberger & Spiess power amplifier, Eagle Eye 4-quadrant load bank, Skeleton ultracapacitor, and various battery energy storage systems.
- 8 min Energy Storage Innovation Lab (2 MVA electrical connection for testing of battery energy storage systems of varying chemistries)
ADA accessible, closed toe shoes required.
