TT-01 | SDG&E’s Vanadium Redox Flow Microgrid Tour

Monday, April 10 at 1:00 PM

You are invited to take an exclusive tour of California’s first utility-scale flow battery and microgrid.

In support of the state’s goals for 100% carbon-free electricity, grid reliability and climate resilience, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Electric) undertook and successfully completed a zero-emissions microgrid pilot in December 2021 using a vanadium redox flow (VRF) battery – the first-of-its-kind to be connected to the state’s energy market in 2018.

Different from lithium-ion batteries, the VRF battery is a proven and innovative energy storage system that is safe, non-flammable, flexible, and long-lasting. The electrolyte solution can be reused indefinitely. In fact, there are Sumitomo Electric VRF batteries in Japan that have been efficiently operating for more than 25 years. The demonstration project further shows that VRF batteries are an innovative technology that can be deployed to prevent blackouts caused by natural disasters, improve grid resiliency and integrate more clean, renewable energy into the grid.

The VRF microgrid demonstration is a joint partnership venture between Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and was installed in 2017.

TT-02 | SDG&E’s EV Fleet Cross-Border and Industry Tour

Monday, April 10 at 1:00 PM

Join San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) on an interactive tour of important high-power electric vehicle charging sites in San Diego. Visit key industrial, shipping, and transportation locations to see how San Diego businesses are working to reduce operating costs, eliminate emissions, and simplify maintenance by transitioning to electric vehicles. Learn from SDG&E Clean Transportation members who connect fleets with resources, fleet-friendly charging rates, and financial incentives to easily and cost-effectively design and install the charging infrastructure needed to power medium- and heavy-duty electric fleets.

TWIC card or a government ID is required for all passengers on board.

Cost: $50 per person
